Her Story: Hannah

My name means "Favor" or "Grace."

My story may be found in the Old Testament in the book of 1 Samuel. Oh, how I longed for a son! My husband, Elkanah, loved me despite my barrenness, but God knew the yearning in my heart to be a mother.  To make matters worse, Elkanah's other wife, Peninnah, taunted me because I was childless. I was grieved and my soul was bitter. Day after day, I ceased not to pray earnestly to the Lord for a son and vowed to dedicate him to the service of the Lord all the days of his life. Grace, the unmerited favor of God, is exactly what the Lord had given me when He blessed me with my beautiful, baby boy, Samuel!  For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of Him!
